Yellow tail spiny eels only grow to six inches and adapt well to the aquarium, but these eels do require live, freeze-dried, or frozen food, preferably worms. Spiny eels are shy and at first may bury themselves up to their head and just peek around until they are comfortable with their tank mates. Only the very smallest aquarium pets such as ornamental shrimp can fit in their mouths, so these are good community tank fish.

Care Guide
Tank setup: Spiny eels like to burrow, so give them a soft sand bottom, plants and hiding places. They are expert escape artists, so a tight-fitting lid is a must.
Feeding: Feed frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp once a day. Some learn to take sinking pellets.
Tankmates: They are peaceful but will eat very small fish. Keep them with community fish too large to fit in their mouth.
Good to know: Spiny eels are not true eels. They love to burrow with just their head showing.
