Collection: Betta Fish

AquariumFish.com works with a Thailand breeder to deliver larger and more colorful bettas than can be found in national pet stores. True show quality bettas can be developed from these strains for the more enthusiastic hobbyist.

Betta fish are named after ancient clan warriors known as the Bettah. Also called the Siamese fighting fish, they were prized in the 1800s when the idea of pitting them against each other for sport became popular in their native Thailand. The winner of each match was decided based on the bravery of betta fish rather than the amount of battle damage inflicted.

Betta fish have a special ability to breathe from the water’s surface through their labyrinth organ, in addition to gills - one reason they are able to tolerate some truly abysmal conditions in the pet store. Bettas prefer to feed from the surface, and enjoy a diet high in protein.

TWO MALE BETTAS CANNOT BE KEPT TOGETHER. Females can share the same space. In the wild males jump from puddle to puddle for a female, and if landing in a puddle with another male they fight to the finish. In the aquarium one male betta will get along fine with his non-betta tank mates.
