L-001 Spotted Sailfin Pleco

Sailfin plecos are named for their giant dorsal fin. Their pattern is a muted marble or spotted, the and the L001 has a spotted. Sometimes called the gold spotted sailfin pleco, these plecos grow very big and live a long time. Adaptable, hardy, they get along with all other fish but can outgrow a small aquarium.

Native to the Tocantins River basin in Brazil, the Spotted Sailfin Pleco grows to an impressive length of 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm). Its large 10 to 11 ray dorsal fin gives it a distinct appearance compared to smaller Ancistrus species. Due to its substantial final size, heavy bioload, and active nocturnal foraging, a minimum aquarium size of 75 to 100 gallons is required for a juvenile, while full-grown adults thrive best in tanks of 125 to 150+ gallons with efficient filtration.

The L-001 Spotted Sailfin Pleco is generally a peaceful substrate dweller, making it an excellent bottom-dwelling giant for larger community setups. However, like other large Pterygoplichthys species, it requires ample space, clean water, and plenty of structural shelter like driftwood and rock caves to feel secure.

Diet & Compatibility:

• Diet: This species is an Omnivore with Strong Herbivorous Tendencies. In nature, it feeds on detritus, algae, biofilm, and small benthic organisms. In the aquarium, it should be fed a varied diet of high-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, squash, and spinach. Occasional meaty foods like bloodworms or sinking carnivore pellets can be offered, but high-protein diets should be minimized to prevent digestive issues.
• Wood Requirement: Providing natural driftwood in the aquarium is essential. Wood serves as a substrate for beneficial biofilm and aids in healthy digestion by providing required dietary fiber.
• Reef / Plant Compatibility: It is Plant Safe With Caution. While juveniles are mostly gentle, large adult specimens may accidentally uproot delicate stems or damage broad-leafed plants (such as Amazon Swords) while rasping for algae or moving along the substrate. Soft-leaved plants may also be consumed if vegetable offerings are lacking.
• Temperament: It is Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive. It completely ignores midwater and surface fish, making it compatible with a wide range of tankmates. However, it can show territorial behavior toward other large Plecostomus species, bottom dwellers, or similar armor-plated catfish over preferred caves and feeding spots.
• Tankmates: Ideal tankmates include medium to large peaceful or semi-aggressive fish such as South/Central American Cichlids, large Tetras, Barbs, Rainbowfish, Angelfish, and Geophagus. Avoid housing with extremely aggressive bottom dwellers or fish small enough to be accidentally trapped under its large body.
