The checkerboard discus, a variation of the parent pigeon blood discus, has a distinct red checkerboard pattern on a cream body. The checkerboard variation was developed in Thailand in the 1980s and is slightly harder to create than the turquoise varieties hence the checkerboard discus are a bit more expensive.
