The Asians created GloFish® by splicing the genes of zebra danios and hi-fin white skirt tetras and tiger barbs with phosphorescent corals and jellyfish. The fish were patented and licensed for sale in the USA several years ago once the FDA determined them to be safe for the environment. Though these fish do not actually glow in the dark, they are truly fluorescent and will keep that bright color throughout their lifespan.

Danios are popular for beginners and expert planted tank enthusiasts. The orange on this fish is a very bright solid color and is genetic; GloFish colors never fade.

Care Guide

Tank setup: Danios are fast swimmers, so give them open swimming space, a filter, plants around the edges and a tight-fitting lid, since they jump. Make sure the tank is fully cycled (which takes several weeks) before adding fish.

Feeding: Feed a quality flake or small pellet once or twice a day, only as much as they eat in a couple of minutes. They also enjoy frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Tankmates: Danios get along with most peaceful community fish, such as tetras, rasboras, barbs, corydoras and livebearers. Their speed can stress slow, long-finned fish like bettas and fancy guppies, and large predatory fish will eat them.

Good to know: GloFish colors look brightest under a blue or actinic LED light. Care is the same as for any zebra danio. Danios are fast and jump when startled, so keep a lid on the tank.
