Collection: South American Cichlids
Colorful, Intelligent Aquarium Fish
South American Cichlids are admired for their vivid colors, complex behaviors, and surprisingly gentle temperaments compared to their African cousins. Found in rivers and lakes from the Amazon to the Orinoco, these fish add character and life to any freshwater aquarium.

South American Cichlids are generally tolerant of other fish species. Unlike African Cichlids, they make excellent community fish—provided that any smaller tankmates can’t fit inside their mouths.
There are a few colorful exceptions, such as Oscars, Butterkofferi, and Red Terrors. These big personalities are true brutes—but they’re also great pets that quickly learn to recognize their keepers and even take food from your hand.
For best results, we recommend starting with medium-sized fish (about 2–3 inches) so they can adapt and grow into your aquarium environment. For dwarf Cichlids, medium size is around 1.25–1.5 inches.
At AquariumFish.com, we offer a wide selection of South American Cichlids for sale, including peaceful community favorites and impressive centerpiece fish. From elegant Angelfish and Apistogrammas to show-stopping Oscars and Severums, each specimen is hand-selected and shipped with our live-arrival guarantee.
