South American Cichlids are generally tolerant of other fish species. Unlike African Cichlids, they make excellent community fish—provided that any smaller tankmates can’t fit inside their mouths.

There are a few colorful exceptions, such as Oscars, Butterkofferi, and Red Terrors. These big personalities are true brutes—but they’re also great pets that quickly learn to recognize their keepers and even take food from your hand.

For best results, we recommend starting with medium-sized fish (about 2–3 inches) so they can adapt and grow into your aquarium environment. For dwarf Cichlids, medium size is around 1.25–1.5 inches.
