Collection: Discus
Elegant and Colorful Amazon Cichlids
Discus fish are striking, disc-shaped cichlids found throughout the Amazon River basin. Known as the “kings of the aquarium,” they’re admired for their graceful form, vibrant colors, and calm nature. Although technically part of the cichlid family, Discus are peaceful and far more refined in shape and temperament than most of their cousins.

Their round, discus-like bodies inspired the name, reminiscent of the Olympic disks thrown by athletes. Discus are widely considered among the most beautiful freshwater aquarium fish in the world. However, many Asian and European strains bred purely for color have lost some of the hardiness found in their wild ancestors.
At AquariumFish.com, we import Discus from Vietnam — known for producing stronger, more adaptable strains than other regions. These Vietnamese Discus handle a wider range of conditions, thriving in pH levels up to 7.4 and even in moderately hard water. They readily eat frozen foods and pellets, making them suitable for both experienced aquarists and dedicated beginners.
Of course, we also offer wild Discus, which may not display the same intense coloration as their captive-bred relatives but embody an elegance and purity unmatched in the aquarium world — strong of heart, calm in movement, and unmistakably natural.
A Brief History of the Discus
Wild Discus were first discovered by Austrian naturalist Dr. Johann Baptist Natterer during his exploration of the Brazilian Amazon basin in 1835. The species entered the aquarium trade in 1934, and soon after, two pioneers — Dr. Eduard Schmidt-Focke of Germany and Jack Wattley of the United States — began selective breeding programs that shaped nearly all modern color varieties. Their work in the 1960s produced the beloved Blue Diamond, Red Turquoise, Snakeskin, and Blue Turquoise Discus we know today.
