Wellsophyllia Folded Green Brain Coral: A Vibrant Classic LPS

The Wellsophyllia Folded Green Brain Coral is a striking Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid green coloration, fleshy tissue, and distinctive folded, brain-like structure. Its broad valleys and inflated tissue create a dramatic appearance that makes it an excellent centerpiece for the lower portions of a reef aquarium.

This WYSIWYG specimen displays rich green coloration that becomes especially vivid under blue-spectrum reef lighting. When fully expanded, its fleshy tissue develops pronounced folds and ridges across the underlying skeleton, giving the coral its characteristic open-brain appearance.

Wellsophyllia brain corals are photosynthetic and receive much of their energy from symbiotic zooxanthellae within their tissue. They are also capable feeders and may extend feeding tentacles, particularly during the evening or when food is introduced to the aquarium. With stable reef parameters, moderate lighting, gentle water movement, and occasional supplemental feeding, this coral can maintain excellent coloration and healthy tissue expansion.

Diet & Compatibility:

• Diet: Mixotroph. Primarily photosynthetic but also capable of capturing meaty foods from the water column.

• Feeding: Supplemental target feeding can support growth and tissue development. Offer small portions of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine foods, or quality coral foods approximately 1–2 times per week.

• Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe, but should be given adequate space from neighboring corals due to its ability to sting nearby corals.

• Temperament: Semi-Aggressive toward neighboring corals but generally peaceful toward fish and mobile invertebrates.

• Placement: Best positioned on the sand bed or a smooth, stable lower surface. Avoid placing the fleshy tissue against sharp rockwork that could cause damage as the coral expands.

• Water Requirements: Maintain stable reef conditions with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. Avoid rapid changes in salinity, temperature, or nutrient levels.

• Water Flow: Low to moderate, indirect flow that allows the fleshy tissue to expand naturally without being constantly blasted.

• Lighting: Moderate reef lighting is generally appropriate.
