Humu Triggerfish: The Painted Aggressor
The Picasso Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus), also widely known as the Humu Picasso Triggerfish or Lagoon Triggerfish, is one of the most recognizable and popular triggerfish in the aquarium trade. Its striking, abstract color pattern—resembling a work of art—gives this fish its namesake.
This species has a tan body with gradient dark bands, vibrant blue and black stripes on the head, and a yellow-orange stripe running from cheek to cheek. Growing up to 10-12 inches in length, the Humu Triggerfish is a powerful, active, and highly territorial fish.
A large tank, minimum size of 180 gallons or more, is required for an adult. The aquarium must feature plenty of open swimming space and numerous, **securely placed** rock structures, as this trigger is known to rearrange décor and dig in the substrate while establishing its territory.
Diet & Compatibility:
- Diet: This trigger is a voracious **carnivore** and benthic feeder. In the aquarium, it requires a varied diet of meaty frozen foods, including squid, krill, small fish, and high-quality pellets.
- Teeth Care: It is **absolutely essential** to regularly provide **hard-shelled, meaty foods** (such as clams-in-shell, mussels, or hard shrimp) to naturally wear down its constantly growing beak and prevent overgrowth.
- Reef Compatibility: The Rhinecanthus genus is strictly **Not Reef Safe**. The Picasso Triggerfish will use its strong jaws to crush and consume virtually all ornamental invertebrates (shrimp, crabs, snails, sea stars) and is highly likely to damage or destroy corals.
- Temperament: It is highly **Aggressive** and territorial, particularly toward other triggerfish and smaller, timid fish. It should only be housed with large, robust, and assertive tankmates that can defend themselves. Care must be taken when placing hands in the tank, as they may bite.
