Teira Batfish: A Majestic & Graceful Aquarium Fish
The Teira Batfish (Platax teira), also known as the Longfin Batfish, is a majestic and truly one-of-a-kind species that adds a touch of stunning elegance to any large marine aquarium. Its unique appearance features a distinctive, disc-shaped body and incredibly long, flowing dorsal and anal fins, especially in its juvenile stage. As it matures, it develops a large, plate-like body. This peaceful and slow-moving fish is a gentle giant that adds a calm and commanding presence to a fish-only with live rock (FOWLR) tank.
Why the Teira Batfish is a Great Choice (for large aquariums):
- Unforgettable Appearance: Its unique body shape and graceful fins make it a memorable centerpiece.
- Peaceful Temperament: It is a non-aggressive species that coexists well with other peaceful and semi-aggressive tank mates.
- Hardy: When properly cared for, the Teira Batfish is a very hardy and resilient species.
- Reef-Safe (with caution): While it will not harm corals, its diet includes small invertebrates and it may occasionally nip at sessile invertebrates.
Important Note: The Teira Batfish can grow to a very large size, often reaching over 15 inches in home aquariums. It requires a tank of at least 180 gallons as a juvenile, and a tank of 300 gallons or more to thrive as an adult.
