Tangerine Solar Storm Clownfish: The Hypomelanistic Designer
The Tangerine Solar Storm Clownfish is a high-grade designer variant of the popular Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris), selectively bred to enhance its white patterning and reduce its black pigmentation. This reduction in black pigment, known as hypomelanism (or 'Tangerine albino' in the trade), results in fins that have a unique, smoky appearance and an overall brighter, cleaner contrast between the intense orange/tangerine coloration and the crisp white areas.
This striking captive-bred fish shares the hardiness and ease of care of the common Ocellaris Clownfish, making it an excellent centerpiece for both beginner and advanced marine aquarists. It is peaceful, will readily accept prepared foods, and is a fantastic candidate for forming a mated pair.
Diet & Compatibility:
- Diet: As an Omnivore, the Tangerine Solar Storm Clownfish is an unfussy eater. For optimal color and health, its diet should be varied and high-quality. Feed a mix of marine pellet/flake foods, as well as frozen meaty foods such as Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
- Feeding: Feed small amounts 1-2 times per day. Captive-bred clowns are generally aggressive feeders and will dart out to take food.
- Reef Compatibility: It is Reef Safe. This clownfish is one of the most reliable reef inhabitants and will not bother corals. Like its wild counterparts, it may form a symbiotic relationship with an anemone, such as a Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor), though it does not require a host to thrive in the aquarium.
- Temperament: It is Peaceful but can become mildly territorial or aggressive toward other clownfish, especially non-paired individuals or those of a different species. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair. It is an ideal tank mate for other peaceful reef fish like gobies, blennies, and dartfish, but avoid housing it with large, aggressive predators.
- Social Structure: All clownfish are hermaphrodites. In a pair, the larger fish will become the dominant female, and the smaller fish will remain the sexually active male.
