Splendid Pseudochromis: The Spotted Dottyback
The Splendid Pseudochromis, scientifically known as Manonichthys splendens (formerly Pseudochromis splendens), is one of the most visually striking and largest members of the Dottyback family. Its body features an exquisite pattern of deep blue to gray coloration, heavily speckled with contrasting yellow and white spots, and is finished with a vibrant yellow tail. Its captivating appearance makes it a standout feature in the marine aquarium.
Originating from the Indo-Pacific, particularly around Indonesia and Northwest Australia, this species can reach an impressive maximum size of up to 5 inches (12.7 cm), which is large for a Dottyback. Due to its size and assertive, territorial nature, a minimum tank size of 55 to 75 gallons is highly recommended to provide adequate space for territory establishment and minimize stress on tankmates.
The Splendid Pseudochromis is a very hardy fish, and captive-bred specimens are widely available, making it an excellent, disease-resistant choice for the experienced aquarist who can manage its temperament.
Diet & Compatibility:
- Diet: This fish is a dedicated Carnivore. Its natural diet consists of worms and small invertebrates.
- Feeding: It is an aggressive and enthusiastic eater in the aquarium and will readily accept a varied diet of meaty foods. Feed small, frequent meals (2-3 times daily) of high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets or flakes. Ensuring a good diet helps maintain its vibrant colors.
- Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe With Caution. While the Splendid Pseudochromis is not known to bother corals, it is a highly effective hunter of small invertebrates. Small ornamental shrimp (like sexy shrimp or anemone shrimp) will be systematically eaten. However, it is prized for its habit of hunting and controlling populations of nuisance Bristleworms.
- Temperament: Semi-Aggressive / Territorial. This is one of the bolder Dottyback species. It will establish a territory, typically around a cave or rock structure, and aggressively defend it, often against fish much larger than itself. It must be kept singly as it will fight with other Dottybacks and similar-looking fish (like Royal Grammas).
- Tankmates: Should be housed with larger, semi-aggressive, or active fish that occupy the mid-to-upper water column and do not share its territorial niche. Good choices include Tangs, Damsels, Hawkfish, and larger Angels. Introduce the Dottyback last to the aquarium.
