The ruby red pencilfish, or red pencilfish, ranks up there with the rare espei pencilfish as the holy grails among pencilfish enthusiasts. Common pencilfish are generally grouped with tetras since they share similar size and schooling characteristics. Ruby reds display a deep deep red color and are only found in a few protected tributaries of the Peruvian Amazon basin.
