Redhead Coral Goby: The Pint-Sized, Coral-Dwelling Jewel

The Redhead Coral Goby (Paragobiodon echinocephalus) is a tiny, charismatic fish that makes a spectacular display in small reef aquariums. Reaching a maximum size of less than two inches, this striking goby is instantly recognizable by its vivid red-orange head that contrasts dramatically with its dark brown to black body. The Redhead Coral Goby is an obligate coral dweller, relying on the branches of corals like Stylophora or Pocillopora for protection, food, and breeding. This specialized lifestyle means it is considered Reef-Safe with Caution; while it won't bother fish or most inverts, it may irritate its host coral as it consumes coral mucus and small polyps for part of its diet. It is a peaceful addition to the fish population but should not be housed with other similar gobies unless they are a confirmed pair. A fascinating biological trait is its ability to change sex in both directions (bi-directional hermaphroditism) to ensure a stable mated pair.

Why the Redhead Coral Goby is a Great Choice:

  • Striking Coloration: The vibrant two-tone color makes it an eye-catching focal point despite its tiny size.
  • Nano-Tank Suitable: Its small maximum size makes it a perfect fit for smaller reef aquariums (20+ gallons).
  • Unique Behavior: Observing its life nestled within the branches of a stony coral is highly rewarding.
  • Peaceful Temperament: Poses no threat to larger tank mates or ornamental invertebrates.
