Myriophyllum 'Guyana': The Feathered Nano Bush

Myriophyllum sp. 'Guyana', also known as Guyana Milfoil, is a delicate and visually striking green stem plant that has become a favorite in the aquascaping hobby, particularly for nano aquariums. While its exact species identification is debated (sometimes linked to Myriophyllum mattogrossense), this tissue culture is highly prized for its small, compact form and bright, light-green color which it retains even under high light intensity.

Unlike other, larger milfoil species, this cultivar exhibits an ultra-miniature growth pattern. Each stem is fine, densely covered in feathery, needle-like leaves, and readily branches to form a tight, attractive bush. Its bushy, manageable size (typically under 8 inches) allows it to be used effectively in the midground of larger tanks or as a stunning, full background plant in a small desktop aquascape.

Although considered an easy plant to grow relative to many other stemmed plants, optimal, dense growth requires stable conditions and a comprehensive nutrient regimen. Regular trimming is necessary to maintain its shape and prevent the lower, older growth from deteriorating.

Care & Aquascaping Tips:

  • Lighting: Requires Medium to High light. Higher light levels (90+ PAR) are recommended for a more dense, compact, and profusely branching growth habit.
  • CO₂ Injection: Highly Recommended. While it can survive in low-tech setups, CO₂ injection is key to achieving the plant's signature dense, bushy form and faster growth rate. Without it, the plant is more vulnerable to algae.
  • Substrate: A nutrient-rich substrate, such as specialized aquatic soil, is ideal to support its root development and fast growth. Liquid column fertilization is also important, especially to maintain its vibrant green coloration.
  • Planting Technique: Plant individual stems or small bunches into the substrate. Due to its propensity to branch and grow dense, stems should be spaced to allow adequate water flow and light penetration as it matures.
  • Trimming: Regular "topping" (cutting the top 3-4 inches and replanting) is necessary. After several pruning cycles, it is recommended to remove the deteriorating, bare bottom portions of the stems and replant only the fresh, healthy tops.
  • Compatibility: Perfectly safe for all fish, shrimp, and snails. Its fine texture offers excellent cover for fry and smaller invertebrates.
