Miniatus Grouper: The Fiery Red Predator
The Miniatus Grouper (Cephalopholis miniata), a favorite among large marine fish enthusiasts, commands attention with its spectacular coloration. This species features an intense, vibrant red to orange base color, which is generously dappled with hundreds of electric blue spots across its head, body, and fins. This stunning display makes it one of the most vividly colored of all the Groupers.
As a highly aggressive and territorial apex predator, the Miniatus Grouper is suitable only for Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) systems. It will readily consume any tank mate—fish or motile invertebrate—that can fit into its sizable mouth. Due to its potential adult size of up to 18 inches, a minimum tank size of 180 gallons or larger is required to provide adequate swimming room and robust filtration. Ensure all rockwork is secure, as this species may rearrange the aquascape to create favored hiding spots.
Why the Miniatus Grouper is a Great Choice:
- Electric Coloration: The bright red body and bold blue spots provide unmatched visual impact.
- Hardy and Robust: An exceptionally resilient and long-lived fish once fully acclimated.
- Dominant Presence: Adds undeniable authority and personality as a centerpiece fish in a large tank.
- Easy Diet: Readily accepts a wide variety of large, meaty frozen foods.
