Marine Betta: The Spotted, Mysterious Aquarium Mimic

The Marine Betta (Calloplesiops altivelis), also commonly known as the Comet, is one of the most unique and striking fish in the hobby. Hailing from the Indo-Pacific, this fish is characterized by its dramatic black to dark brown body completely covered in tiny, mesmerizing white spots. Its most famous feature is the large, black ocellated (eye) spot near its caudal fin.

This elaborate spot is part of a clever defense mechanism known as Batesian mimicry: when threatened, the Marine Betta darts headfirst into a crevice, leaving its tail exposed. The dorsal fin spot, combined with the tail shape, perfectly mimics the menacing head of the venomous White-mouth Moray Eel. While generally shy and secretive, preferring abundant rockwork and caves, it is an efficient carnivorous predator that will readily consume small fish and ornamental shrimp. It requires a quiet environment and larger tank mates it cannot swallow.
