Ludwigia Inclinata 'Crystal': The Unique Color Accent
Ludwigia inclinata 'Crystal' is a sophisticated and highly sought-after variant of the South American aquatic stem plant Ludwigia inclinata. This tissue culture is prized for its eccentric and unique coloration, which, under optimal conditions, can range from a light green or yellow at the base to an ethereal, almost white, light pink, or "crystal" hue on the new growth and leaf crowns. This distinct appearance makes it an extraordinary centerpiece or contrast plant in high-tech aquascapes.
Native to the bogs and slow-moving waters of Central and South America, this plant is a rapid grower, capable of reaching heights of 8 to 16 inches (20-40 cm). Unlike hardier stem plants, the 'Crystal' variety is known to be quite fragile and sensitive to unstable water parameters or drastic changes. Its stunning color is entirely dependent on providing a highly controlled, high-tech environment.
The Ludwigia 'Crystal' is an ideal choice for the experienced aquascaper looking to introduce a truly unique and vibrant color contrast against deep green plants. Due to its fast growth, regular trimming (every 2-3 weeks) is essential to maintain its shape and encourage a desirable, bushy appearance.
Care & Aquascaping:
- Lighting: Requires High Intensity Lighting. Intense, full-spectrum LED lighting is crucial to achieve and maintain its distinctive "crystal" or light-red coloration. Under insufficient light, the plant will turn dull green and become leggy.
- CO₂: CO₂ Injection is Required/Highly Recommended. Consistent CO₂ supplementation (20-30 ppm) is necessary for healthy, fast growth, and vibrant color. Without it, the plant is prone to melt, slow growth, and loss of color.
- Fertilization: This plant is a heavy feeder. A Nutrient-Rich Substrate (like aquasoil) is highly recommended. Consistent liquid dosing of macro (NPK) and micronutrients, especially Iron, is necessary to support its rapid growth and deep color saturation.
- Placement: Due to its vertical growth and eventual height, it is best used as a Midground to Background Accent. Plant stems in groups of 3-5 to create a dense, impactful splash of color.
- Propagation: Easily propagated by Stem Cuttings. Simply trim the top, healthy portion of the stem and replant it directly into the substrate. The mother plant will branch out, and the cutting will quickly establish roots.
- Temperament: Peaceful. Will not harm fish or invertebrates. It is an excellent choice for a community planted tank or a shrimp tank, provided all other care requirements are met.
