L-169 Tiger Pleco

Also called the L-169 Butterfly Pleco, though the profile is higher than the typical flat butterfly appearance like on the L-52, one can't fight Google searches. The L-169 Tiger Pleco is small and maximum size is 3.5 inches. The stripes are very distinct and like most plecos, the L-169 needs a little driftwood in the fish tank.

Unlike larger catfish species, the Gold Tiger Stripe Pleco remains exceptionally manageable in size, reaching an adult length of only 3.5 to 4 inches (9-10 cm). Because of its small footprint and peaceful demeanor, a minimum tank size of 20 to 30 gallons is sufficient for a single adult. Like other members of the Panaqolus genus, this pleco relies heavily on wood in its habitat, requiring a well-decorated setup featuring plenty of driftwood, hides, and clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current.

The L-169 Gold Tiger Stripe Pleco is a nocturnal and somewhat shy species that spends much of its day hiding among caves and wooden tangles. It is completely peaceful toward community tankmates and other bottom-dwellers, though males may defend their favorite spawning cave against other plecos.

Diet & Compatibility:

  • Diet: This species is a specialized Wood-Eating Herbivore / Omnivore (xylivore). Driftwood is an essential component of its dietary requirement, as wood fibers aid in its digestive process. In captivity, its diet should consist primarily of high-quality vegetable-based sinking wafers, spirulina tablets, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and squash. Occasional high-protein treats (such as bloodworms or brine shrimp) can be offered sparingly, but excessive animal protein should be avoided.
  • Feeding: Feed late in the evening after aquarium lights are turned off, as this species is predominantly nocturnal and active in the dark. Always ensure fresh driftwood is present in the aquarium at all times.
  • Plant & Reef Compatibility: It is generally Plant Safe With Caution. While it will not actively hunt live plants, soft-leaved plants like Echinodorus (Amazon Swords) may occasionally be rasped on if the pleco is underfed or seeking additional plant matter.
  • Temperament: It is Peaceful / Community Safe. It can be safely kept with almost any small to medium peaceful freshwater species, including tetras, rasboras, corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and gouramis. It is non-aggressive toward non-bottom-dwelling tankmates, though males may display mild territorial behavior toward rival plecos over preferred caves.
  • Water Parameters: Requires warm, soft to medium-hard water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.2 and temperatures between 77°F and 84°F (25-29°C). High water quality with low nitrate levels is essential.
