Katherine's Fairy Wrasse: Rare, Vibrant, and Peaceful
The Katherine's Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus katherinae) is a beautiful and somewhat rare member of the Cirrhilabrus genus, highly sought after for its distinctive coloration and peaceful temperament. While not always common in the aquarium trade, it is a fantastic, reef-safe addition for hobbyists with established systems.
This species exhibits strong sexual dimorphism and features color patterns that vary depending on the specific collection location (Japan, Palau, or other Western Pacific sites):
- Males are the showier fish, typically displaying a wide, bold red or purplish-red central stripe running horizontally along the body, with contrasting silvery-white on the belly and sometimes yellow or blue accents on the fins.
- Females are generally more subdued, often having a reddish-pink body with a characteristic black spot on the caudal peduncle (base of the tail).
Like all Fairy Wrasses, the male will frequently "flash," showcasing temporary, brilliant color intensification.
Care & Compatibility
- Size: This is a smaller Fairy Wrasse, growing to a maximum size of about 3–4 inches (7–10 cm).
- Minimum Tank Size: A tank of 50–90 gallons is recommended. While small, this fish is very active and needs plenty of open swimming space alongside rockwork.
- Temperament: Peaceful and Docile. Katherine's Fairy Wrasse is a timid species that should only be kept with other peaceful fish. It may be easily stressed or outcompeted for food by aggressive tankmates (like some tangs, angels, or damsels). It can be kept singly or in a harem (one male and several females) if introduced simultaneously into a large tank. Avoid mixing with other similarly-patterned male Cirrhilabrus species.
- Reef Compatibility: 100% Reef Safe. This wrasse is a strict zooplankton feeder and will not harm corals, clams, or sessile invertebrates. It is also generally safe with ornamental inverts like shrimp and snails.
- Diet: Carnivore/Zooplankton Feeder. Due to its high activity level and fast metabolism, it requires a diverse, protein-rich diet provided in small amounts multiple times per day (3-4 times). Offer high-quality enriched frozen foods (mysis, copepods, brine shrimp) and fine marine pellets or flakes.
- Tank Requirements:
- Lid: A tight-fitting lid is absolutely critical, as this wrasse, like all in the genus, is a notorious jumper.
- Hiding Spots: It is essential to provide abundant live rock structure with plenty of caves and shaded crevices, as this fish is used to deeper water and may be shy, especially upon introduction. They do not burrow in the sand to sleep.
