Indo Queen Acropora: The Deep Water Beauty

The Indo Queen Acropora (Acropora species, often believed to be a deeper water variant of A. tenuis or a similar branching species) is a highly desirable and relatively rare strain of Small Polyp Stony (SPS) coral. This coral is admired for its beautiful and complex color pattern, typically featuring a dark blue or purple base with striking bright green or neon yellow polyps that contrast vividly against the skeletal body.

Unlike some shallower water Acropora that grow densely, the Indo Queen often exhibits a more open, delicately branching structure, characteristic of corals found in lower-light environments. However, to maintain its intense color saturation in the aquarium, it still requires controlled, high-quality lighting, often emphasizing the blue spectrum.

Like all collector Acropora strains, the Indo Queen demands advanced to expert care. It requires pristine, stable water chemistry, especially consistent alkalinity and ultra-low nutrient levels (ULNS), to prevent the dark base from fading or the coral from browning (browning out).

Diet & Compatibility:

  • Diet: This coral is primarily Photosynthetic. It hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide the vast majority of its energy needs through light absorption.
  • Feeding: Supplemental feeding is strongly recommended to support its nutritional needs and growth. Target feed the coral polyps 2-3 times per week with fine, high-quality particulate foods, such as amino acid solutions, cyclops, or commercial coral powders. Nutrient control (ULNS) must be maintained even while feeding.
  • Reef Compatibility: It is Reef Safe but intensely Territorial. As a true Scleractinia, it is highly aggressive toward adjacent corals. It requires 6 inches or more of clearance from all other corals to prevent chemical or physical warfare via stinging cells.
  • Temperament: Peaceful toward fish and motile invertebrates, but Highly Aggressive/Territorial toward other corals. Placement should be in the mid-to-upper tank area under controlled lighting and moderate to strong, turbulent water flow.
  • Water Requirements: Requires expert-level water stability and ultra-low nutrient levels. Any fluctuations in alkalinity (dKH) can cause rapid tissue loss (RTN/STN). Critical parameters: Alkalinity (dKH 8.0-9.0), Calcium (420-450 ppm), and Magnesium (1300-1400 ppm). Demands intense, high-quality lighting (PAR 300-450+) and strong water flow.
