Helanthium tenellum: The Pygmy Chain Sword

Helanthium tenellum , commonly known as the Pygmy Chain Sword or Dwarf Chain Sword, is a versatile and popular grass-like plant/tissue culture used to create a natural, lawn-like foreground carpet in aquariums. It belongs to the Chain Sword group and was historically known by the synonym Echinodorus tenellus until its reclassification. It is prized for its ability to form dense, spreading colonies via horizontal runners, much like a natural turf.

This plant is native to a vast region spanning North, Central, and South America, resulting in variations in leaf size and color. The narrow-leaf variety can develop dark-red or purplish tips under high light and good nutrient conditions, while the 'Green' or 'Broad Leaf' cultivars typically maintain a bright, light-green color. Its adaptability makes it suitable for both low-tech and high-tech aquariums, although its growth rate and color intensity are significantly improved with supplemental CO₂ and strong lighting.

Care Requirements & Planting:

• Difficulty: Easy to Medium. It is undemanding and will survive in low-tech setups, but achieving a quick, dense carpet requires moderate-to-high care.
• Lighting: Medium to High. High light encourages a faster spread and, for the standard variety, brings out the attractive reddish coloration on new growth. In low light, it will grow slower and may become taller (3−6 inches) and more sparse (etiolated).
• CO₂ Supplementation: Recommended. While not strictly necessary, CO₂ injection greatly accelerates the growth rate and runner production, ensuring a quick and dense carpet formation. Consistent CO₂ is often needed for the best coloration.
• Substrate & Fertilization: This is a strong Root Feeder. A Nutrient-Rich Substrate (e.g., aquatic soil) or frequent use of Root Tabs is highly recommended to support healthy, spreading growth. It also benefits from liquid fertilization, especially Iron.
• Planting: Divide the potted or tissue culture plant into small tufts of 2-3 leaves each and plant them individually into the substrate, spaced about 1 to 2 inches (2−5 cm) apart. The initial sparse planting allows the plant to quickly fill the gaps with runners, establishing a solid lawn.
• Pruning: Regular mowing with scissors is required to maintain a low, dense carpet and prevent it from shading out new growth. Trimming also encourages the development of new runners and a thicker lawn.
