Goldenback Triggerfish: The Rare Deep-Water Gem
The Goldenback Triggerfish (Xanthichthys caeruleolineatus), also known as the Bluelined Triggerfish or Outrigger Triggerfish, is a rare and highly prized species. Like all members of the Xanthichthys genus, it is a planktivore and is significantly less aggressive than triggers from the *Rhinecanthus* family.
This species is characterized by a handsome golden-yellow or tan back, a body covered in fine dots, and distinct blue stripes or lines on the face. Growing up to 14-16 inches in length, the Goldenback Triggerfish requires a very large system, with a minimum aquarium size of 200-250 gallons or more to accommodate its active, open-water nature.
In the wild, this species is typically found on deep, current-swept seaward reefs, often at depths of 150-650 feet. It should be provided with plenty of open swimming space and moderate to strong water flow, along with numerous secure rock crevices for retreat.
Diet & Compatibility:
- Diet: This trigger is a planktivore in the wild, feeding mainly on zooplankton. In the aquarium, it requires a varied diet of meaty frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp, copepods, krill, and chopped clam or squid, often requiring two to three feedings per day.
- Teeth Care: It is essential to regularly provide hard-shelled, meaty foods (such as clams-in-shell or whole shrimp) to naturally wear down its constantly growing beak and prevent overgrowth.
- Reef Compatibility: The Xanthichthys genus is considered Reef Safe with Caution. While it is generally safe for corals (both soft and stony), a large specimen is highly likely to prey upon small crustaceans, ornamental shrimp, and small snails/worms.
- Temperament: It is Semi-Aggressive to moderate. It is considered one of the more peaceful triggers and should be housed with other moderately aggressive, larger fish. It is often kept singly but can be aggressive toward other triggerfish, especially conspecifics.
