Giant Danio

The Giant Danio is a flashy, large schooling fish that will grow to about three inches in the aquarium. Extremely hardy, giant danios may be kept with cichlids and in large community tanks, but will outgrow small nano tanks. We recommend a school of at least four. Most giant danios in the trade are captive-bred in ponds in Florida. Our current shipment is from Asia and on the small side, but they are mighty in spirit.

Care Guide

Tank setup: These large, fast danios need lots of open swimming space, good filtration and some current, plus a tight-fitting lid, since they jump. Make sure the tank is fully cycled (which takes several weeks) before adding fish.

Feeding: Feed a quality flake or small pellet once or twice a day, only as much as they eat in a couple of minutes. They also enjoy frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Tankmates: They can live with medium to large peaceful fish and many cichlids, since they are fast enough to stay out of trouble. Avoid tiny fish that may be outcompeted for food.

Good to know: Giant danios are fast, strong swimmers that can keep up with cichlids and larger community fish. Give them plenty of open swimming room and a tight lid.
