The German blue ram was bred in Germany a generation ago to provide a more colorful and hardier ram for the aquarium trade. Ram is short for the species name “ramirezi”, but it is also reminiscent of their tendency to butt heads like a terrestrial ram. These are beautiful fish whether captive-bred for color, such as German blue rams, or wild, such as Bolivian rams. They are peaceful, hardy and get along with other community species (except colorful fancy shrimp; they like them so much they eat them).

Care Guide
Tank setup: Rams need warm, very clean, soft water. Give them a sand bottom, plants, driftwood, leaf litter and flat stones for spawning. Rams are sensitive to poor water quality.
Feeding: Feed small amounts of quality micro pellets or flake once or twice a day. They also enjoy frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
Tankmates: Rams do well with small, peaceful fish that like warm, soft water, such as tetras, rasboras, hatchetfish, corydoras and discus. They may eat small shrimp. Avoid large or boisterous fish.
Good to know: Rams often form pairs and lay eggs on flat stones. Stable, warm water is the key to keeping them healthy.
