Four-stripe Damselfish: The Striking Black-Tailed Staple
The Four-stripe Damselfish (Dascyllus melanurus), often confused with the similar Three-stripe Damselfish, is a well-known and hardy species that adds a touch of bold, black-and-white contrast to any marine aquarium. This damselfish is easily identified by its striking white body with four prominent black vertical stripes and its key distinguishing feature: a solid black tail. While it is a very active and visually appealing fish, it's crucial to understand its temperament. As it matures, this species can become highly aggressive and territorial towards other fish, especially new additions to the tank. For this reason, it is best suited for an aquarium with more aggressive tank mates or in a species-specific setup. It is completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Why the Four-stripe Damselfish is a Great Choice:
- Hardy & Durable: This is a very robust species that is easy to care for and a great choice for beginner aquarists.
- Striking Coloration: Its simple yet bold black and white pattern makes it stand out.
- Completely Reef-Safe: It will not harm corals, clams, or most other invertebrates.
- Active Swimmer: It adds a lot of energy and movement as it explores rockwork and guards its territory.
