Electric Blue Hermit Crab: The Colorful Reef Scavenger

The Electric Blue Hermit Crab (Calcinus elegans) is one of the most stunning and beneficial members of any marine clean-up crew. Originating from the Indo-Pacific, particularly the Marshall Islands, this tiny crustacean boasts a truly vibrant coloration that makes it a popular centerpiece invertebrate.

The Electric Blue Hermit Crab is instantly recognizable by its striking appearance: electric blue legs with bold black banding, contrasting brownish-green claws, and exceptionally bright orange antennae. They are tireless scavengers and herbivores, constantly picking at detritus, uneaten food, and nuisance algae throughout the aquarium.

As with all hermit crabs, Calcinus elegans has a soft, unprotected abdomen and must live within the discarded shell of a marine snail. It is essential to provide a variety of empty shells in the aquarium, ensuring it always has a larger home to move into after molting. Without available shells, this crab may become aggressive and attempt to forcibly remove a snail from its home to claim the shell.

Diet, Utility & Compatibility:

  • Algae Control: This hermit crab is an excellent part of the clean-up crew, actively consuming green hair algae and unsightly cyanobacteria (red slime algae). They also help aerate the sand as they scavenge.
  • Diet: The Electric Blue Hermit Crab is an Omnivore and a dedicated scavenger. Its primary food source should be algae and detritus. If insufficient algae is present in the tank, supplement its diet with dried seaweed (Nori), sinking algae pellets, and occasional small pieces of frozen meaty foods.
  • Reef Compatibility: This species is generally considered Reef Safe. It will not eat coral polyps, but due to its constant foraging, it may occasionally knock over small, unsecured coral frags as it climbs over live rock.
  • Temperament: It is Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive. While peaceful toward fish and corals, it can be aggressive toward live snails (especially large Turbo snails) or other hermit crabs when seeking a new shell. Mitigate this risk by always providing extra empty shells of varying sizes.
  • Molting: Like all crustaceans, it must molt to grow. Provide a selection of shells that are slightly larger than its current one to prevent shell conflict.
