Dragon Goby: The Sand Sifting Specialist

The Dragon Goby (Amblygobius phalaena), also known as the Sleeper Banded or Bullet Goby, is a highly functional and handsome fish for the marine aquarium. This goby is easily recognized by its elongated, torpedo-shaped body featuring a pattern of dark brown or black vertical bands over a pale yellow-green base, often highlighted by brilliant blue markings on the face and fins.

The Dragon Goby is most valued for its dedication to tank maintenance. It is a tireless sand sifter, constantly taking mouthfuls of substrate, filtering out detritus, small invertebrates, and microalgae through its gills, and expelling the clean sand. This aeration process is excellent for preventing detritus buildup and maintaining a healthy sand bed. They are also known consumers of nuisance flatworms.

Given its size, which can reach up to 6 inches, and its need for ample foraging space, the Dragon Goby requires a minimum of a 55-gallon aquarium with a deep, established sand bed (2-4 inches). While generally Reef Safe and peaceful toward most tank mates, aquarists should note that their constant digging can bury low-lying corals or disrupt unsecured rockwork. Due to their tendency to jump when startled, a secure, tight-fitting lid is essential.
