Domino Damselfish: The Aggressive & Iconic Staple
The Domino Damselfish (Dascyllus trimaculatus) also known as the Three Spot Domino Damselfish is a well-known and hardy species with an iconic juvenile appearance that adds a touch of bold contrast to a marine aquarium. As a juvenile, this damselfish is easily identified by its striking jet-black body with two prominent white spots on its back and a third on its forehead, resembling a domino tile. It is important to note that as this fish matures, it loses its white spots and becomes a solid gray or black, while also becoming highly aggressive and territorial. For this reason, it is best suited for an aquarium with more assertive or larger tank mates, and it should be the last fish added to the tank. It is completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Why the Domino Damselfish is a Great Choice:
- Hardy & Durable: This is a very robust species that is easy to care for and a great choice for beginner aquarists.
- Striking Juvenile Coloration: Its iconic black and white pattern makes it a popular choice.
- Completely Reef-Safe: It will not harm corals, clams, or most other invertebrates.
- Adds Energy to the Tank: It is a very active swimmer that adds a lot of energy and movement as it explores rockwork and guards its territory.
