The Buffalo Head Cichlid, also called the Lionhead cichlid or African blockhead, has a distinct fat forehead that earns its common names. These cichlids are wild from the Congo River and rarely make it to the aquarium trade. Buffalo head cichlids grow to just under four inches and will do well in any African cichlid tank. The cichlids prefer a cave to inhabit and protect.

Care Guide
Tank setup: West African cichlids prefer soft to neutral water. Use a sand or fine gravel bottom with plants, driftwood and caves or flowerpots for spawning.
Feeding: Feed a quality flake or small pellet once or twice a day. They also enjoy frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
Tankmates: They get along with peaceful community fish like tetras, barbs, rasboras, corydoras and plecos. Give each pair its own territory, and expect more defensiveness when breeding.
Good to know: Buffalo heads come from fast rapids, so they like good water flow and stay near the bottom, hopping between rocks and caves.
