Black Storm Clownfish: The Panda Pattern Designer
The Black Storm Clownfish is a highly sought-after, captive-bred designer variant of the Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). This fish is renowned for its dramatic, unique coloration, featuring an exaggerated white body pattern, an almost entirely white face, and bold, irregular patches of jet black that can cover much of its body. The intense white and black patterning often gives it a striking, high-contrast "panda" or "marbled" appearance, ensuring no two specimens are exactly alike.
Like all captive-bred Ocellaris strains, the Black Storm Clownfish is an exceptionally hardy and easy-to-care-for fish, making it a perfect choice for both beginner and seasoned aquarists. Its small size, peaceful nature toward non-clownfish tankmates, and ability to thrive without an anemone make it an ideal centerpiece for most reef or fish-only systems.
Diet & Compatibility:
- Diet: The Black Storm Clownfish is an Omnivore and a non-fussy eater. Its diet should be varied to maintain optimal health and color. Offer a mix of high-quality marine pellet and flake foods, supplemented with frozen meaty foods such as Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Including spirulina-rich foods is also beneficial.
- Feeding: Feed small portions 2-3 times per day, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes.
- Reef Compatibility: It is Reef Safe. This clownfish will not harm corals, and due to being captive-bred, is less prone to territorial aggression than some wild-caught species. It may form a symbiotic relationship with a host anemone, such as the popular Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor), but does not require one to survive or thrive.
- Temperament: It is generally Peaceful / Semi-Aggressive. It is passive toward most non-clownfish tankmates, but like all clownfish, a mated pair will become territorial, especially around their chosen home (anemone or rockwork). Only one pair of clownfish should be kept in a typical home aquarium (under 100 gallons).
- Aquarium Setup: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a single fish or a bonded pair, with ample live rock to provide shelter and potential nesting sites.
