Black Neon Dottyback: The Captive-Bred Hybrid

The Black Neon Dottyback (Pseudochromis aldabraensis x Pseudochromis springeri) is a captive-bred hybrid resulting from the cross between the Neon Dottyback and the Springer's Dottyback, both known for their vibrant colors and hardy nature. This stunning fish combines the best traits of its parents, exhibiting an eye-catching appearance that is highly sought after by marine aquarists.

Its coloration is its most unique feature, as the body can range from a deep jet black to a rusty brown, depending on its mood and environment. This darker body color is contrasted sharply by the brilliant, exaggerated electric blue stripes that run along the top of its head, dorsal fin, and caudal (tail) fin—a feature more prominent than in the Springer's Dottyback parent. Growing to a maximum size of around 3 to 3.5 inches (7.5-9 cm), it is a small, torpedo-shaped fish perfect for nano and reef systems.

Like many Dottybacks, this hybrid can be territorial. However, the captive-bred nature often results in a hardier and somewhat less aggressive specimen than its wild-caught counterparts. A minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons is recommended to provide enough space for establishing territory.

Diet & Compatibility:

  • Diet: The Black Neon Dottyback is a dedicated Carnivore and a micro-predator in the reef environment. It is an extremely easy feeder and will readily accept a varied diet of meaty frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, enriched krill, and commercial frozen marine blends. They will also typically accept high-quality flake and pellet foods once established.
  • Feeding: Feed small portions 1-2 times daily. They are fast eaters, so ensure slower tankmates get their share. This species, like its Springer's Dottyback parent, is also known to hunt and eat nuisance bristleworms in the aquarium.
  • Reef Compatibility: It is generally considered Reef Safe With Caution. While Dottybacks leave corals alone, they possess a predatory instinct toward small ornamental invertebrates. They may systematically hunt and consume small peppermint shrimp, sexy shrimp, and tiny ornamental snails. They are safe with most larger, robust inverts like turbo snails and large hermits.
  • Temperament: It is Semi-Aggressive / Territorial. It should be kept singly unless introduced to the tank as a confirmed pair, as they are aggressive toward conspecifics (other Dottybacks). To prevent bullying, it is highly recommended to introduce the Black Neon Dottyback as one of the last fish into a community tank. Compatible tankmates include Dwarf Angelfish, Clownfish, Tangs, and larger Wrasses. Avoid housing with very small, slow, or shy fish.
