Banded Serpent Starfish: The Reef Scavenger
The Banded Serpent Starfish (Ophiolepis superba), also known as the Superb Brittle Star or Tiger Striped Serpent Star, is a highly valued member of the cleanup crew in a marine aquarium. Unlike some of its larger, more predatory cousins (like the Green Brittle Star), this species is known for its peaceful nature and diligent scavenging ability.
This echinoderm is visually striking, featuring a central disc (up to 1.2 inches/3 cm) and five long, slender arms that can reach a tip-to-tip span of up to 8-10 inches (20-25 cm). Its coloration is typically pale cream or beige, highlighted by distinctive dark brown to black bands running along the length of its smooth, flexible arms.
The Banded Serpent Starfish is largely nocturnal, spending its day hidden within the rockwork, only to emerge at night to sweep the substrate for detritus and uneaten food, making it an excellent addition to a mature system.
Diet & Compatibility:
- Diet: The Banded Serpent Starfish is a dedicated Omnivore/Detritivore and a voracious scavenger. In the aquarium, it consumes detritus, waste food, and various forms of organic matter.
- Feeding: While it will scavenge for its food, supplemental feeding is highly recommended to ensure its long-term health and prevent starvation. Feed small pieces of meaty foods, such as chopped shrimp, fish flesh, clam, or sinking marine pellets, 2-3 times per week, ideally after the lights are out. Target feeding near its hiding spot is often effective.
- Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe. This species is generally considered safe with corals, sessile invertebrates, and healthy fish. It is not known to prey on fish or large invertebrates, provided it is well-fed. Caution is advised when keeping any echinoderm with extremely small, slow, or sick fish, but instances of predation by this specific species are rare.
- Temperament: Peaceful. The Banded Serpent Star is non-aggressive and is safe to keep with most community fish. Avoid housing it with predators that may view its arms as a snack, such as puffers, large triggerfish, or Harlequin Shrimp.
- Handling & Acclimation: Like all echinoderms, this species is extremely sensitive to sudden changes in salinity, pH, and water quality. A slow drip acclimation is essential. Never expose the starfish to air while handling, as this can trap air bubbles internally and be fatal.
