Threadfin Butterflyfish: The Elegant & Eye-Catching Centerpiece

The Threadfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga) also called the Auriga Butterflyfish is a beautiful and unique fish that makes an excellent addition to a large fish-only marine aquarium. This butterflyfish is easily recognized by its elegant coloration: a white body with a vibrant yellow posterior and an eye-like black spot on the dorsal fin. Its common name comes from the long, trailing filament that extends from its soft dorsal fin. It is an active and graceful swimmer that requires plenty of open space and rockwork to feel secure. While generally peaceful, it can be territorial towards other butterflyfish. It is not considered reef-safe, as it is known to nip at corals, anemones, and other invertebrates.

Why the Threadfin Butterflyfish is a Great Choice:

  • Stunning Appearance: Its high-contrast coloration and unique "threadfin" make it a true showpiece.
  • Adds Energy to the Tank: It adds a lot of energy and graceful movement to a spacious aquarium.
  • Impressive Size: It grows to a large size, making it a commanding and impressive fish.
  • Hardy & Resilient: It is known to be a very durable and adaptable species.
