Anubias Nana on Driftwood: The Ultimate Low-Tech Decor
The Anubias Nana on Driftwood is a powerhouse of aquascaping beauty and simplicity, combining the world's most popular aquarium plant with a natural piece of pre-cured driftwood. This decorative piece arrives ready-to-place, instantly adding a lush, dark green focal point to any freshwater tank.
Anubias barteri var. nana (Anubias barteri var. nana) is celebrated for its incredibly tough, leathery leaves and is virtually indestructible by fish or poor water conditions, making it an ideal choice for both beginners and tanks housing herbivorous or aggressive fish like African Cichlids or Goldfish.
The plant is naturally an epiphyte, meaning it must attach its roots (rhizoids) to a hard surface. By coming pre-attached to driftwood, the crucial rhizome is safely exposed, preventing rot that occurs when the rhizome is buried in the substrate. This ensures long-term health and growth with minimal maintenance.
Aquascaping & Care:
- Placement & Usage: This piece is perfect as a Midground or Foreground accent in any aquarium. Its compact size and pre-attached nature make it ideal for quick re-arranging and easy tank maintenance. It looks stunning when placed directly on the substrate or against contrasting rocks.
- Rhizome Safety: The rhizome (the horizontal stem from which leaves and roots sprout) must not be buried in the gravel or sand, which is why having it pre-attached to driftwood is the safest option.
- Light & Algae: Anubias Nana thrives in Low to Medium Light. In high-light setups, its leaves are susceptible to BBA (Black Brush Algae) due to its very slow growth rate (1-3 new leaves per month). If algae appears, move the driftwood to a shadier spot.
- Fish Compatibility: The leaves are thick and contain bitter calcium oxalate, making it Highly Resistant to being eaten by common plant-munching fish like Goldfish, large Barb species, and many Cichlids.
- Propagation: Propagation is simple: carefully cut the rhizome with a clean razor, ensuring each new section has 3-4 leaves, then glue or tie the new piece to another rock or wood.
