Spanish Hogfish: The Colorful, Aggressive Wrasse

The Spanish Hogfish (Bodianus rufus) is one of the largest and most well-known species in the wrasse family (Labridae). It is a highly active and beautifully colored fish, popular in large, fish-only marine aquariums. Its coloration features a striking pattern, typically a purple or blue upper body, head, and dorsal fin that abruptly transitions to a bright yellow-orange lower body and caudal section. Juveniles exhibit a similar pattern but are often more vibrant and blue-heavy.

Native to the Western Atlantic Ocean, including Bermuda, Florida, and the Caribbean, the Spanish Hogfish is a powerful and assertive fish. It can reach a maximum length of 10 to 16 inches (25-40 cm) in the wild, though it typically maxes out at the lower end of that range in captivity. Due to its potential size, active nature, and strong appetite, a minimum aquarium size of 150 to 200 gallons is necessary for a long-term home. The tank should be decorated with ample, stable rockwork to provide shelter and allow for its natural foraging and digging behavior.

The Spanish Hogfish is a hardy and long-lived species, but its temperament and predatory diet make it suitable only for specific, larger aquarium setups.

Diet & Compatibility:

  • Diet: The Spanish Hogfish is a dedicated Carnivore. Its natural diet includes hard-shelled invertebrates such as clams, snails, mussels, brittle stars, sea urchins, worms, and various crustaceans, which it excavates from the substrate using its pointed snout (the origin of the "hogfish" name). In captivity, it must be fed a diverse, protein-rich diet of frozen meaty foods, including mysis shrimp, krill, silversides, squid, and clams. Juveniles may accept pellet or flake food, but this should only supplement a varied frozen diet.
  • Feeding: Feed adults once daily, ensuring tankmates are robust enough to compete for food.
  • Reef Compatibility: It is Not Reef Safe. While the juvenile form often acts as a cleaner fish, the adult is a highly destructive predator that will systematically hunt and consume virtually all ornamental invertebrates, including shrimp, crabs, snails, and clams. They are also known to occasionally disrupt corals or live rock while foraging.
  • Temperament: It is Aggressive / Semi-Aggressive. It should be housed with other large, assertive, and durable tankmates such as large tangs, groupers, aggressive angels, and triggerfish. It will bully or consume smaller, docile fish. It is best kept as the only hogfish in the tank unless you can house a large group in a truly massive aquarium.
  • Special Notes: Like many wrasses, the Spanish Hogfish is a protogynous hermaphrodite, starting life as a female and having the ability to change sex to male. It is also a diurnal fish and will often bury itself in the sand at night or when frightened.
