Sohal Tang: The Bold & Highly Territorial Algae Grazer
The Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal), also known as the Red Sea Sohal Surgeonfish, is a magnificent and highly sought-after fish for the advanced aquarist with a very large marine aquarium. This tang is instantly recognizable by its striking blue and black horizontal stripes, with a prominent orange spine at the base of its tail. While it is undeniably beautiful, the Sohal Tang is also known for being one of the most highly aggressive and territorial tangs in the hobby, and it will often dominate or harass other fish. It should not be kept with other tangs unless the tank is exceptionally large. As a herbivore, it is a fantastic algae-eater, making it a valuable and hardworking member of any clean-up crew. It is completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Why the Sohal Tang is a Great Choice (for the right tank):
- Stunning Appearance: Its vibrant coloration and bold pattern make it a true showpiece.
- Excellent Algae Control: It tirelessly grazes on nuisance algae, helping to keep the tank clean and healthy.
- Completely Reef-Safe: It will not harm corals, clams, or other invertebrates.
- Adds a Commanding Presence: Its active swimming and powerful nature add a dynamic element to a spacious aquarium.
