Jewel Damselfish: The Striking & Robust Species
The Jewel Damselfish (Microspathodon chrysurus), also known as the Yellowtail Damselfish, is a beautiful and exceptionally hardy fish with a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality. As a juvenile, this species is a true showpiece, with a vibrant, iridescent blue body and a brilliant yellow tail. However, as it matures into an adult, its beautiful blue spots and striking coloration fade, and its temperament becomes highly aggressive and territorial. This species is not considered reef-safe, as it has a tendency to nip at corals and is known for its pugnacious behavior towards tank mates, especially in the confines of an aquarium. It is best suited for a large, robust fish-only system.
Why the Jewel Damselfish is a Great Choice:
- Stunning Juvenile Appearance: Its vibrant coloration as a young fish makes it a unique centerpiece.
- Extremely Hardy & Resilient: This is a very durable and adaptable species that can tolerate a wide range of water conditions.
- Active Swimmer: Its constant movement and bold presence add energy to any tank.
- Peaceful in Its Juvenile Stage: It is a suitable community fish early in its life, but requires careful planning as it matures.
